As artists we all look for inspiration. I often torture myself seeking a certain type of inspiration, a type of inspiration that speaks to me. I try going through different genres and ages of music, analyzing different styles of cinematography in movies, scrolling through many different friend’s feeds to see if they’re inspired by something or someone else’s work. Most of the time I’m buying photography books and skim through them, pickup new techniques or styles and they usually go back to collecting dust with the rest of my collection. I recently discovered Saul Leiter. I cannot put into words what this great put into photographs. My current inspiration comes from his work. It’s been a while since someone’s work really hit me as hard as his did. This man was capturing masterpieces with color film while everyone during his time was shooting in black & white. A humble man who wasn’t afraid of going against the grain. Here’s a great quote from the documentary about him In No Great Hurry
“I’m a person who likes to postpone things. I see no reason for being in a rush. When you consider many of the things that people treat very seriously, you realize that they don’t deserve to be treated that seriously. And that many of the things people worry about aren’t worth worrying about.”
Truly a humble man and a extremely huge inspiration in my continued pursuit of artistic inspiration and knowledge. Thank you Saul Leiter.
